Ocean cruisers who have been reluctant to river cruise because of the ship’s small cabins will find that a new river cruise ship due out in October 2019 will be the perfect fit. When AmaWaterways’ AmaMagna debuts, she’ll be twice the width of traditional river ships, and offer more personal space, more unique dining venues and more leisure opportunities. That extended width puts her in another league altogether. AmaMagna arguably will have as much in common with small luxury cruise ships as with river cruise ships. Indeed, AmaMagna is poised to usher in a new era of river cruising that is as close as it gets to small ocean ship cruising.
River cruise ships in Europe are limited, physically, by the constraints of the waterways on the European continent. Low bridges, shallow water and narrow locks all are combined when considering the length, width and height of most European river cruise ships. Because of those constraints, river cruise lines have not been able innovate their ships in the way that oceangoing lines have. That will change with AmaMagna.
Of note is that AmaMagna’s increased width is allowing AmaWaterways to up the stateroom design game. The smallest stateroom – the Category E fixed window river view staterooms on Lower Deck – will measure 205 square feet, while Category AA and AB Balcony Staterooms will be 252 square feet. That will be larger than the average balcony stateroom on most oceangoing cruise ships.
Even more space will be available in Category AS and BS accommodations which will be 355 square feet each. AmaMagna’s top Category OS Suite is to die for on a river cruise ship, offering 710 square feet of space with two bathrooms, a full-size bath tub, a spacious balcony, and separate living and sleeping areas.
To compare, the average river cruise ship cabin is from about 160 square feet to slightly more than 200 square feet. Suites are larger on river ships, but not near the size of the massive Category OS Suite that AmaWaterways has planned for AmaMagna. AmaWaterways has designated some staterooms as interconnecting rooms, with an interior door that can be opened to allow friends and family traveling together to access each other’s staterooms as on oceangoing cruise ships.
Additional Public Areas
AmaWaterways is also taking the opportunity with AmaMagna to offer numerous additional public areas that are available on three decks. It will be the largest river cruise ship in Europe, offering an intimate Wine Bar and the Chef’s Table Restaurant on its lowest deck. Up one deck on Main Deck will be the ship’s Reception Lobby and Main Restaurant, which is located forward of the lobby.
On Upper Deck, AmaMagna will have an Al Fresco Lounge at the bow of the ship; while at the stern, guests will find the Zen Wellness Studio housing a Fitness Room, Hair Salon and two Massage Treatment Rooms; and her innovative Water Sports Platform opens to reveal a Sundowner boat upon which intimate river excursions will take place — at no extra charge. The Sun Deck will house numerous sun loungers, a Swimming Pool, a Whirlpool, and a Jogging Track. An elevator will provide access throughout most decks. Upon first glance at the deck plan, the public rooms look shorter than on previous river cruise ships, but to equalize, they are much wider.
AmaMagna is poised to be a game-changer, not just for AmaWaterways, but for the river cruise industry as a whole. Because of her large size, she will not be able to relocate to other rivers, or do longer itineraries like Amsterdam to Budapest. Instead, she’ll be located only on the Danube, purpose-built to deliver a superb product there that will likely be a big hit with both new and experienced river cruisers – as well as small ship ocean cruisers, who will likely choose this new river cruise option.
The technical statistics for the new double-wide river ship are:
- Length 443 feet
- Width 72 feet
- Crew 70
- Staterooms 98
- Passengers 198
