In the Bavarian German village of Oberammergau, the reenactment of the life, death, and resurrection of of Jesus Christ has been taking place once a decade for centuries. It was first enacted in order to ward off the plague when in 1633, the residents promised to perform the play every ten years.

2,000 actors will take part in the Passion Play between May 15-Oct 4, 2020. Land-based operators include Globus, Cosmos and Collette who provide coach transportation. Avalon Waterways offers a 12-day Danube cruise for 9 departures, serving dinner during a 3-hour intermission of the 5-hour presentation. Tauck has one remaining of the three with availability (two have sold out). Crystal River Cruises is the most recent to join the play’s frenzy by offering the opportunity to attend on select sailings of their three river ships. Uniworld and AmaWaterways have not announced the specific sailings they plan to offer the extraordinary opportunity to see the play of the last days of Jesus of Nazareth through the Last Supper, Crucifiction, and Resurrection, performed only by actors born in Oberammergau.

Another option involves the tour operator Collette which has a nearly two-week itinerary including both land and a Danube River cruise through the Alpine countries of Austria, Germany, and Switzerland available on multiple dates during each month from May – September.
